Buyers' Guide: Affordable Gear for your First Horse
Gear Review: Your Horse  Issue 306: 22nd February - 26th March 2008
If you’re buying your first horse you’ll want gear that is affordable, useful, hard-wearing and trustworthy. You’ll need a range of different products for him, from tack and rugs to grooming kit and boots – and the most
expensive isn’t always best. Here are some ideas to help you put your shopping list together without breaking the bank.

IV Horse fully adjustable headcollar and leadrope:
This headcollar can be adjusted to suit a range of horses. It comes in pony, cob or full size, and a range of colours including navy (pictured), red, black, pink, royal or purple. It has quick-release clips at the cheek and a ring under the chin to attach your leadrope to. The leadrope is a sturdy cotton two-tone design, two metres long, with a zinc trigger clip.

IV Horse Detangler, Shampoo and Hoof Defence:
Mane and Tail Detangler is a fast-acting formula for getting the knots out of hair, while the shampoo includes eucalyptus and chamomile. Shine On Hoof Defence is a coating for the hoof wall, sole and frog that’s non-toxic and helps balance the moisture content of hooves while allowing them to breathe. It comes in clear or black.

IV Horse curry comb and snudgy:
A rubber curry comb is useful for lifting loose hair when your horse is moulting, as well as tackling dried mud. The snudgy is shaped to fit snugly into your palm and has long, massaging rubber ‘fingers’ to reach
into your horse’s coat, dislodging mud, scurf and excess hair.

IV Horse lightweight turnout rug:
This rug has cross-surcingles, nylon lining
over the shoulders and shoulder darts. The chest fastens with buckles, there’s fleece wither protection, adjustable leg straps and a tail flap, and a handy address label on the inside. It’s nylon-lined with ‘Mesh4Fresh’ air panels to help air circulate around the body.

IV Horse Print fleece travel rug:
This is a smart and eye-catching rug in a purple and blue check design, for when you’re out and about. It comes in horse sizes from 5ft to 7ft3in and pony sizes from 2ft 9in to 4ft 9in. It has a tailored neckline, fleece wither protection, buckle fastenings at the chest and cross surcingles.

IV Horse raised padded flash bridle:
This bridle would be a good choice for any type of horse, and suitable for different disciplines. The browband and noseband are raised and stitched, and it comes in black or
havana, with a removable fl ash strap. It’s 5⁄8in wide, and comes complete with a set of
rubber reins.

IV Horse 1200 denier rug with neck cover:
This rug has cross surcingles and leg straps, gusseted tail flap, and twin front closures with both buckle and quick-release clips. It has a nylon lining with stainless steel fittings and is available in black or bronze, with sizes from 2ft 9in to 7ft3in. Complete with neck cover.

IV Horse haynet:
This nylon haynet comes in small, medium and
large sizes, depending on your horse’s size and appetite! Consider using a large net in the stable and keeping a smaller net spare for using in your trailer.

IV Horse travel boots:
This set of padded boots comes in navy and yellow check, with a black fl eece lining. There are three large Velcro fastenings on each leg and a reinforced strike pad at the back of the foot.

IV Horse tailguard:
A tailguard is a cheap piece of kit that can be worth its weight in gold, as it will help protect your horse’s delicate tail area while in the trailer. This comes in three sizes: small, medium and large, with Velcro fastening.
